I suppose a statistic would be proper with this headline. Now, from somewhere, I was notified today that a small company posted an article on the average internet user and how much time they spend online. This little statistic is very important when trying to forecast future trends and how social media, video, and the “internet addiction” play a role in, not only the business world, but our “average,” everyday lives. That company was Nielsen (you know, the one that gives all the statistics on media/demographics?). And the statistic is, ”The Average Internet User” spends 68 hours online, per month. That’s not really impressive, as it breaks down to only 2.27 hours per day. However, I think once upon a time someone released a statistic which (prepare yourself) prescribed the amount of time that was spent on viewing video online? Mmmm, maybe ComScore?
- 77 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video.
- 97 million viewers watched 5.1 billion videos on YouTube.com (52.3 videos per viewer).
- 52.5 million viewers watched 371 million videos on MySpace.com (7.1 videos per viewer).
- The duration of the average online video was 3.1 minutes.
- The duration of the average online video viewed at Hulu was 11.9 minutes, higher than any other video property in the top ten.
Now that pretty much sums up my reason for posting this tonight. I’ll leave you with a thought, a simple projection based thesis that demands…”This is FiOS, This is Big.” Oh, before I forget, Finland passed a law today that mandates broadband internet speed as a “right.” Now finally, I leave you with the daunting task of allowing yourself to be consumed by the www… In what way would you use video to capture the attention of your own audience? That statement is based only to all of you that actually spend 68 hours per month of your time on the beautiful, deep black hole, that is the INTERNET.
